COMING SOON – New Classes for 2023
The Fiber Art Studio will set aside one Saturday or Sunday per month for a full day or half-day workshop.
Full Day Workshop: 10:00 AM – 3:30 PM (includes 30 min break for lunch)
Half-Day Workshop: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
WEEKEND WORKSHOP SERIES: DESIGN CONCEPTS
Throughout the series, Kate will share some of the techniques she uses to create her quilt patterns and will provide an overview of fine art elements (such as line, shape, texture and light value). Students can apply these techniques in their own artwork, to create patterns and enhance the quality of their designs.
The Design Concepts series offers a basic understanding of fine art elements. Ideal for hobbyists or quilters who want to become fiber artists, or those who are just curious about fine art concepts. Students may register for just one or several classes in the series.

Would you like to create an applique pattern based on your favorite photo or drawing? In this workshop, Kate Themel will explain some of the fine art techniques she uses to create realism in her quilt designs. Students will use fundamental design concepts, not computer programs, to:
- identify areas of light and shadow in a photo or drawing
- simplify those areas into applique shapes
- choose colors and fabrics based on light value
The workshop will include demonstrations, printed info, and hands-on activities. Students may bring a reference photo or drawing if they choose.

10:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Class fee $85
In this class, Kate will share her thoughts on choosing fabrics for each composition, and why it is such an important part of her design process. Students will use what they learn in class to help them choose fabrics for their own quilt patterns.
Students will use fundamental design concepts to:
- understand how to use a color wheel
- identify colors that complement or clash with each other
- explore the ways color can set an emotional tone and affect the viewer’s experience
The workshop will include demonstrations, printed info, and hands-on activities.
Expressive Lines: Free-Motion Quilting
Saturday, March 11, 2023
10:00 AM – 3:30 PM
Class fee: $85
In this class, students will explore LINE as a design element and how lines are used in fiber art. Kate will demonstrate how she uses quilting stitches to add texture, shading, and details to her fiber art compositions. Students will practice free-motion quilting techniques that they can apply to their own artwork. Students will need to bring their own sewing machine for this workshop.
Half-Day WORKSHOP
Intro to Sewing on a Machine, for Kids and Adults
10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Class fee: $30 per person
A quick and easy introduction to operating a sewing machine. Students will learn how to identify the basic parts of a sewing machine, how to change threads for the top and bobbin, and how to use the foot pedal. Students will practice sewing fabrics with straight seams.
If you don’t have a sewing machine of your own (or don’t want your child to use your machine LOL), please send us an email and let us know. The Fiber Art Studio has a basic sewing machine, fabric and tools for you to use while you learn!
NOTE: Children must be at least 12 years old to take this class. Any student under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
For any class or workshop (other than One on One Mentoring) the minimum enrollment is 2 students; a maximum of 8 students, per session.
